Niners release Brandon Moore

(08-10) 12:49 PDT — The 49ers made a surprising move Sunday, releasing inside linebacker Brandon Moore, who led the team in tackles and sacks in 2006.
The move opens a roster spot that may be filled with free agent linebacker Takeo Spikes, a two-time Pro Bowl selection who was released in the offseason by Philadelphia after 10 years in the NFL.
Spikes was scheduled to visited the 49ers’ Santa Clara headquarters Sunday afternoon. Nolan said he would undergo a physical. He started 14 games for the Eagles last year before undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery.
“Looking down the road,” Nolan said, “I was pretty confident that in the end I was probably going to have to make a move with Brandon. “Doing it at this time is partly because he has been a loyal 49er for the last six years. This gives him an opportunity to get with another squad. He wasn’t getting as many reps as I know he’d like to have.”
The 49ers also placed offensive Damane Duckett on injured reserve. He incurred a broken bone in his kneecap last week and will undergo surgery, a club spokesman said.
Moore was listed on the depth chart behind Jeff Ulbrich at the strong-side inside (or Ted) linebacker spot. Offseason acquisition Dontarrious Thomas and rookie Larry Grant are competing at that spot.
Moore, 29, was entering his seventh year. The former Oklahoma player joined the club as a free agent in 2002. He started 10 games in ‘05 after Ulbrich tore a biceps muscle. Moore ranked second on the team in tackles that year. In 2006 he started 11 games and finished with a team-high 114 total tackles, 6.5 sacks and four forced fumbles.
After the season he was named winner of the club’s Matt Hazeltine Award as the team’s most courageous and inspirational player.
But at the start of the 2007 season preseason, Moore was in the coaches’ doghouse for lackadaisical play.
He had been expected to start alongside rookie Patrick Willis. Instead, the 49ers moved Derek Smith to that position and put Moore on the bench.
The media’s Q&A with Venables after the scrimmage

MEDIA: How well is Austin Box playing right now?
BV: “He is getting close to really being where you want him to be. A lot of what I am just talking about is just mental, where you won’t beat yourself. That is not to be taken the wrong way that he is just the surest guy we have and not the best player. He is also a very good athlete and a very good player. He is dong really well. He still needs to polish up his game, but he has come a long way.
“He didn’t have any background at linebacker coming out of high school. He is a lot like Rufus (Alexander), who was a 190-pound defensive end coming out of high school and when he got here he had never been in a linebacker stance.”
MEDIA: What has been your take on Daniel Franklin so far?
BV: “He did pretty good. He has some suddenness to him and quickness. I always knew that he had that quickness because I had him in camp. Daniel has good instincts and he fills the gap. I like him. He puts his head down and he will hit you. He needs to work on some technique things, but he made some plays tonight and put his nose on the ball a few times.
“He is a physical player and he had a real nice break-up from a big hit. He could have intercepted it as the ball hung on the tight ends back forever, kind of like a spindle just sitting there spinning there on his back. All he had to do was reach up there and pick it off, but he made the hit and he is doing a good job at middle linebacker for us.”
MEDIA: How did Keenan Clayton play?
BV: “Keenan had a real good scrimmage and showed up in a lot of plays. He has picked right up where he left off in the spring and is playing with a lot of poise, passion and he is playing smart. Keenan is one of the most athletic players we have on our team, and when he plays with confidence like he is right now he is a very good football player. We need him to be to be good on defense this season.”
MEDIA: How are Brandon Crow and Lamont Robinson playing?
BV: “I keep pictures of players on my wall of players at my position who have contributed to our program, and Gayron Allen is on that wall. He is a great example of a guy who was not the most talented guy on our team and who had to wait his time to get on the field, but once he did he was fundamentally sound and played some great football for us. I point to him with guys like Brandon and Lamont and tell them they have to keep pushing, they have to keep developing and they have to keep working because their time wll come in some form or fashion on this team. Brandon is working at both the MIKE and SAM, and Lamont at the SAM. Both have a good chance to play on special teams for us, and so far both are having good springs.”

Sam Bradford on Ryan Broyles: “Every day you come in and he’s got some highlight you rewind about four times and say, ‘Did he just do that?’ ” Bradford said of his new receiving target. “I mean, he’s got some unreal moves. He’s real quick and real shifty and is going to be a great player for us.”
Defensive coordinator Brent Venables is impressed with Mike Balogun, ““He’s pretty good.”
Offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson, “our defensive front seven got the best of us.”
Bradford throws 2 picks, Lendy Holmes got one and Keenan Clayton got the other
The offense had 2 long drives but it only yielded 2 FGs, “It wasn’t our best effort on offense,” Bradford said.
Said Clayton, “They had two 11-play drives back to back. We can never be pleased about what happened or how everything went. We had a few good plays here and there, but our defense should not be on the field for two 11-play drives, especially two in a row.”
