New Hampshire receiver Ball ties Rice’s TD recordPosted: September 23, 2006
New Hampshire receiver David Ball scored three touchdowns in the first half against Dartmouth on Saturday to tie Jerry Rice’s Division I-AA record of 50 in a career. Ball brought down a jump ball from Ricky Santos in the corner of the end zone with 2:43 left in the second quarter, a 6-yard TD that gave New Hampshire a 35-0 lead. The UNH side of the stands stood and applauded, and even some of the home Dartmouth fans gave the senior from Orange, Vt., a hand.
Ball scored in the first quarter when he turned a quick swing pass into a 37-yard score. And he scored early in the second when he took a short hook and wove his way to the goal line, diving over a defender to score and make it 28-0 with 11 minutes left in the half.
Rice scored 50 touchdowns from 1981-84 at Mississippi Valley State. He went on to set NFL records of 1,549 receptions for 22,895 yards and 197 touchdowns.
