University of New Hampshire back-up quarterback Henri “Hank” Hendricks was charged with murder in San Diego in the death of a professional surfer.Hendricks, 21, is the fifth man charged in connection with the May beating death of Emery Kauanui Jr.
Hendricks was charged with murder, assault and battery. He was scheduled to be arraigned in San Diego on Monday and was suspended from the UNH football team effective immediately.
Police say Hendricks and the others are members of the Bird Rock Bandits gang.
Hendricks was not arrested immediately after the beating but gave a statement on his involvement to police a few days later.
Court records show Kauanui was punched and kicked after a May 24 argument at a local pub, then left bleeding outside a home where he lived with his mother. He died from brain injuries four days later.
Prosecutors filed new charges against the other four men, who pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to murder, assault and battery. If convicted, they could be sentenced to life in prison.
